What's next

Since taking over responsibility for the squad a few months ago we have made massive progress, even though that is yet to show in the results. We have adopted a simple yet powerful playing system which all players have bought in to. The team is back on track with extremely positive feedback from all players is positive - this year was the best team and WC trip since 2000. The losses are explained with our opponents having developed more than us. Despite the results clearly not going our way we take away plenty of experience and good memories from Poland.
One very important thing I have learnt over the last few weeks is that provided the right people have the focus and motivation and receive the support required, the GB team that we will be build over the next year will be very competitive in the next WCQ. However, people should realise that there is a lot of work that is required to take this team to its full potential. Work to be done by unpaid volunteers.
Over the coming weeks and months we will be working hard to continue to build the platform of success which we started work on in Oct 09. We will look at ways of both strengthening the squad, leadership, organisation and funding.
We will also put together a schedule of activities for the short term and gradually populate it with the medium to long term objectives and goals.
For the benefit of the impatient and curious, next training camp is likely to be in Sweden in a few months time.
Following the recent trials we now what people that will be in the team. Anyone that wants to try out for the team should summarise their Floorball experience in a email to

Match report, Great Britain - Serbia 4-5
|
| Added 2010-02-08 by Johan |

We ended our World Cup qualification against Serbia, a match where we were the clearly better team for a majority of the match. Yet the match ended 4-5 and we lost again. Coming into the first period we started really well and created loads of goal scoring opportunities. Even though we played well, the period ended 0-2 with Serbia as leaders although we had 10 or so excellent goal scoring opportunities of what we should have scored at least 4 goals, we scored nothing.
The only way we can explain this is sharpness in the finishing touch, we just couldn't get the shots on goal or the shots were too weak. Looking back at why, we believe it was because we played two extremely tough matches the days leading up to this match and everyone was tired. It was only 10am in the morning and 12 hours away from the Poland match, for the players the time had not been enough to recharge both mentally and physically.
In the second period we came out as a stronger team and it started to show in the goal scoring, we went from 0-2 to 2-2. Third period started really well and we went from 2-2 to 4-2 and we looked like the winning team. Serbia had nothing!
Then the downward spiral started, when we should have been working to close the game, instead we kept attacking and because of this we got really stressed and lost our heads. As a result we gave Serbia numerous attempts to counterattack on us even though we were leading with two goals. 4-3 came, 4-4 came (when it was 23 seconds left of the match). We thought that was it and the match would go to overtime. Then out of nowhere they also scored 4-5 when it was less than one second left of the match, 0.6 of second to be exact. I have never experienced anything like this on or off the pitch in my whole life.
Worth noting is that the Serbs had one really good player who scored all their goals but the last one. The last he assisted to. An obvious man of the match for the Serbs.
Congratulations to Alex Holland, man of the match for Team GB.

Match report, Poland - Great Britain 12-0

How is it possible we can loose with 12-0 and still feel so proud over our performance? It sounds very strange but I tell you why. We went down to 6 attackers and three defenders for a large part of the game and everyone that remained on the pitch put on a fantastic performance, in particular in the second part of the match where loads of things just clicked in our defensive. Our problem throughout the tournament has been the attack. It is clear we lack two to three good quality top forwards that can help maintain possession and by doing so give our defensive a bit of breathing room.
The Poles were good and we knew that they would be. We also knew what we had to watch out for from their side, and so we did for most of the game. It was clear that the Poles were very frustrated and dissapointed in their performance, that their game plan just didn't work. That said, they did score 12 goals so of course something worked for them.
Tomorrow we play Serbia, a team full of "Swedes" (again). That aside, we expect the match to be extremely tough and if we play like we did today, we have a very good chance of nailing them.
Congratulations to Simon Baker, man of the match Team GB!

Match report, Denmark - Great Britain 22-2
|

Today’s match against Denmark was always going to be a match where we had to use every single piece of energy to keep the numbers down. This was clear after scouting the match Poland-Denmark from the day before, a match where the Danish team looked very strong.
In the match today the Danes moved the ball very fast and had players working hard to open up space by quick and smart running and they also dynamically adjusted their attacking tactics to counter the various formations and techniques of defending we were working with. Today we were several numbers smaller in many ways. Things to mention are mainly improved preparations and better individual skills. Something we can only change by working harder between the WC tournaments, more training camps, three/four nations matches, developing more individual skills and work actively with our young players such as Andy Lovell, Alex Holland, Sam and Josh Needham.
On the positive side - from moment go all the way to the end of the match we were fighting and kept our heads high. We had two strong keepers in Alex and later in the match Rob, both helped keep the numbers down by doing some excellent saves. We covered loads of shots, played physical to the extent of our capacity and we never gave up. As the match went on we also learnt how to dynamically adjust from 2-1-2 to 2-2-1 in defence, something we didn't get a chance to practise. dynamically adjusting our defening is something we need to work hard to improve the future as it will prove invaluable when meeting opposition that is this good.
Worth noting is that Jason Brim opened the scoring tonight by scoring his first goal in the GB shirt. Congratulations Jason!
Tomorrow we expect an as tough match against Poland and even more physical. Having scouted Poland tonight we believe the Poles doesn't look as strong as the Danes and we hope to expose and use some of their weaknesses and use it to our advantage.
There will also be some minor adjustments in how we play the formations to accomodate the unfortunate shoulder injury on Jason Brim.
Congratulations to Jim Bridger, man of the match Team GB!

First match, Great Britain - Belgium 2-5
|
| Added 2010-02-03 by Johan |
The first match of the tournament started extremely well with solid systematic and defensive play combined with a healthy mix of creative play, just as we as a team had set as the game plan. Belgium clearly entered the match with plenty of respect of our skills and allowed us to build from the back without putting high pressure. This allowed our defenders and centres to control the attacking game without too much stress and through this we created plenty of good chances to score. Jamie Black also scored the important 1-0 goal.
For the full length of the game there were two very even teams on the pitch, both performing very well and at or near their full capacity. As the match went on the ball didn't bounce our way but it did for the Belgians which meant that they managed to score 3 goals in a row. This meant that the score entering the third period was 1-3.
As we entered the third period we went down to two lines. In the hunt for a goal to get one step closer to a draw or win, the Belgians counter attacked the goal which meant 1-4. Andy Lovell a few minutes later then scored a very important 2-4 and we were back in the match.
Towards the end of the match the game opened up significantly and both teams had plenty of chances to score. Both goalies performed extremely well during the part of the match, Alex (our goalie for the day) made some extremely saves and ensured we still had opportunity to even our the score.
With four seconds left of the match Belgium scored in open goal and the match finished 2-5.
In summary we put our heart, soul and smartness onto the pitch today and unfortunately this time it wasn't quite enough. We could as well have won this match with, today just wasn't our day. However - we keep our heads high as our opponents were very good and we are really looking forward to the next few matches in this tournament.
Congratulations to Thomas Cook, man of the match in Team GB! |

Training camp 2 of 2

The team gathered 16th/17th of Jan for the final training camp before the trip to Poland in Feb. The weekend went extremely well and apart from seeing the guys beginning as individuals to working as formations and later as a team, it also offered two very interesting training matches. One loss and one win, perfect! It was important for us to get a feeling for both winning and losing. It was also clear to us as team leaders that we are working with some really talented, professional and committed players.
The team has really come together this weekend and we can see all the individuals more and more glued together a group ready to achieve. Now we start the mental prep for Poland!

Having laid down the foundation for our play and seeing a majority of players adapting very quickly over the weekend felt extremely positive and promising for our big task in February in Poland. There are things we need to work on in the team building but that will be corrected in our second training camp. With the short notice we were of course missing a majority of our Swedish and Swiss based players to this camp.
